Horn recommendation

Small world. I grew up on the Gold Coast which is only a hop, skip and a jump from the OP's location, the Sunshine Coast.

Don't feel too bad about those shipping costs he has, it's a small price to pay for living in paradise!

Anyway I've just been evaluating the MR-64 horns vs a pair of tar filled multicells (300-6Khz). I've written some initial impressions in the link below, but it's not exactly an apples to apples since I'm using a digital cross-over with eq.

Wish I could offer to bring something over for you (I live in the US now but visit the coast most years), but the size and weight kind of make a poor option. But if it's anything small & light and legal lol!

Also, since I don't post here much I wanted to thank GM for his great posts. I learn so much from you good sir, and this thread is no exception!

Which Altec compression drivers are these?

Thanks Earl. Had a look at that....and, well, I didn't really like the look of it that much.

Came across some Altec 805B horns while I was searching......What do you guys think of the Altec 805B horn. This model would suit my application better, as it isn't nearly as wide as the 1003's or 1005's. Does it sound as good as the larger models?
I notice it's cut off frequency is 500 Hz, so if I went this way I would change the crossover from 400 to 500 Hz on the low end. Is 500 too low to operate this horn?

I think the 805 sounds sweet.

One additional aspect to consider when choosing between the even and odd numbered (horizontal) multicell arrangements, is that when you have the odd (e.g. 5 across), you have a cell directly on-axis. When you have an even (e.g. 4 across), you have a 'vane' on axis (for lack of better term).

Whether that makes any measurable difference, I don't recall at the moment.
Don't have 10's anymore to compare my 8's to, and have grown accustomed to the MR's. It may be that if listening @ lower levels, perhaps having a cell on axis is preferable though.

Some opinions on the 805's v's the 1003's & 1005's?

The width of the 805's suits my bass cabs better, whereas the 1003's will overhang considerably. Having said that, if you think the 1003's will ultimately sound better I'll go with those.

Will be fitting GPA 390's.

One more time, directivity control should be one of the main, if not the main, reason for horns in a HIFI/HT app, so did you map your room to find what sort of coverage angle is required to keep early reflections behind you?

When no super-tweeter is used, the number of cells plays a role since the smaller each cell is, the higher in frequency its cut-off, so in my limited experience, only the humongous 18 cells are truly HIFI with good control down to a low frequency and have enough discrete sources to fool our brain into summing them into a homogeneous whole.

If a horn overhangs a cab, add wings to balance it out, it will lower its F3 as a side benefit. ;)

Those 1003s are humongous, >3' wide(38" to be exact).

I notice there is a pair of 805 horns with 291 drivers in the classified section.
Could I use these at a 400 Hz crossover point?
